What Should I Do First If I Get Bitten or Stung?
After getting bitten or stung, it’s important to keep track of your symptoms. If the pain, redness or swelling are contained to the bite site, they are considered minor and can be treated with the treatments outlined below.
If you have swelling that isn’t isolated, such as a sting on the hand that creates swelling in the arm, contact our AFC team. The majority of the time, this type of symptom isn’t as serious as it appears, but it’s still worth talking to a medical professional about.
How to Treat Insect Injuries
- Remove any stingers.
- Gently wash the area with soap and water.
- Apply a damp rag soaked in cold water or ice to the area of the bite or sting for 10 to 20 minutes. This helps reduce pain and swelling.
- Take an OTC pain reliever as needed.
- If the injury is on an arm or leg, elevate it.
